The Battle of Hastings 950th
The battle draws near...

This has to be one of the most anticipated events of 2016...The 950th anniversary of probably the most famous battle in English history....

Every year the excellent events team at English Heritage stage a reconstruction of the battle on the "Battle Abbey" site with hundreds of re-enactors on each side, this year being a major anniversary it is shaping up to be something extra special.

The site itself has some new editions for this anniversary year.... The rooftop of the gatehouse is now open to the public with great views of the surrounding area also there is a special 1066 exhibition in the abbey gatehouse below...

My personal favourites of the new additions to the site are the amazing carved sculptures that can be found while on the battle field walk excellently carved and a well placed along the trail...

Lead up to the main event....

Pevensey Castle hosted "Normans on campaign" over the weekend of 3rd & 4th of September where the Norman knights honed their fighting skills with living history camps in the main castle.....

On 25th September, a band of 1066 warriors will leave York to trek south by horse and foot. On October 14th they will arrive at the site of the Battle of Hastings, 950 years to the day that King Harold met William, Duke of Normandy's invading force.

They will be stopping at many different sites throughout their march ...there is a day to day calendar on the English Heritage website (see below) and for more info follow @englishheritage on social media....
